My male Nicaraguan and female jag are trying to spawn, I really hate hybrids with a passion so I'm not allowing it to happen and I've seperated them. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? If no one has ever heard of it I may let them spawn and grow one single fry out just to see what it looks like.

I may consider it but I'm not a fan of spreading hybrids into the hobby, I'm not even sure if I'm going to let them back together. The jag is a bit beat up after the whole situation

Honestly I understand where people dislike hybrids but All pets are bred into different forms or another and fish really aren't too different. I know that they are seperate species but many types of birds have been hybridized and various canid and feline hybrids exist.

The way I see it unless you are spreading the fry without telling people they are hybrids whats the problem? If you breed a hybrid and people are interested in it then nobody is losing out. Also think of the scientific value, I don`t think any of us here have ever known of a Nic and Jag hybridizing.

There is nothing wrong to have hybrids, as long as you don't sell them as pure breed. It's only immoral if you sell something not what really you say they are. There are hobbyists who love hybrids and experiment with creating new hybrids. However, unless they are line breed hybrids to enhance certain desirable traits, most random hybrids have no improvement over the original breed and not worth owning except for curiosity. Go ahead and raise a few of the hybrids if it works out and see how they look.

I'm going to introduce the male Nicaraguan back into the tank next week when the female jag is fully healed. I will let them spawn and if the eggs are fertilized, I will save the fry and give them to Mfk users, 1 per user.

Do you guys think I should put them into the 135g community tank or put them into their own 50g?

If you try to breed them then 50g for the pair would be good, you don't want any aggression between the pair with other tank mates...Have fun and good luck! :D

Line breeding is not hybridizing.....cobalt Discus were line bred for intense blue coloration, but they are still Discus genetically. Hybridizing is the breeding, intentional or not, of 2 (or more) different species.

Hobbyists should concentrate on breeding pure strains of cichlids....which are disappearing more & more from the wild every day.
