They had this nice JD at my LFS I wanted to get it but not for $40. I would say its about 10"

That jack is a beauty. I myself don't think its crazy over priced but that's just me. Then again I don't see a ton of nice looking jacks in my area just the big box variety and finding a stunner there is fairly rare. I wouldn't mind paying a private seller 40$ for that JD because it takes food, time, and water changes to get a 10inch female JD. Plus its a nice looking jack to boot. IMO if its something that person is really looking for a person could spend 40$ on something alot worse than that.
Although I do agree with some of the other posters that it might not be worth it to them and the person at the fish store could be hosing you on price. More than likely someone that was a private fishkeeper prob brought it in and was just trying to get rid of it for nothing and the fish store person is now trying to turn around and jack up the price on it to make profit. I have seen that done a lot buy some LFS and that is BS!

Yeah they give you next to nothing for your fish and jack the price which I am sure that is what happened. It does appear to be a very nice and thick female JD and at that size I agree. I just do not have $40 to spend on a fish so common. My old JD was similar size and I paid $10 at my other LFS
