Yeah, some geo's get to about a foot. Look through these http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=31

Altifrons are popular, pretty, and get to 12"

Also, geo's are very mellow in my experience. Dont keep them with agressive CA's, but they will be fine with most oddballs.

What can they live with?? Um in the pic you see mine are living with a ray, and some dats. That is just the growout tank. They will be transferred into larger tanks once they can hang with the bigger fish.

I got atleast 4 kinds of geophagus species right now. I love them all, except the red humps which i think are the ugliest geo. Also gymnogeophagus have some awesome fish, which include the balzani. Ive had the balzani(past), bahia red(Past), altifrons(not sure from where), dicrozoster, Tapajos red head, and i have some other Geos im growing out that appear to be Altifrons Manaus.

Theyre relatively peaceful for cichlids, but dont get me wrong they WILL scrap! My 6+" Dicro, and my 6" Altifrons always flare their fins, and tail slap each other, sometimes that leads to a battle where they go into a spinning ball. Never any damage tho, or i would seperate them. I dont like my fish looking all raggedy and beat up.

Heres a few pics of different Geo's...

a few of my dicro, and altifrons having a stand off!

a Tapajos Red head picture..with a Geo. Altifrons Manaus species in the center, with red heads all around him.

And just a pic of my colorful Dicro.

PLEASE EXCUSE MY DIRTY GLASS!

Just remember Geo's grow slower then most fish, not as slow as dats, but not much faster, especially once they reach the 5 "mark, mine slowed down alot!

Does anyone know where to order good quality geophagus red tapajos?

www.tangledupincichlids.com Jeff Rapps, has a very good review from BASICALLY everyone on MFK. Although i have never ordered from him, i want to in the future.

I dont recommend this, but i was desperate... I went to aquabid.com and found a seller. Jeremy Basch. Great guy, hooked me up with some tapajos fry. I grew them out from 3/4"-1.25" to now they are all 2"-4" long.

I ordered 10, because i want to breed mine.. i wish I had some other tapajos to breed them with, but i dont.

Good luck in finding your geos.

I Agree with 420, the red humps are very ugly! If your wanting size out of a geo then go with 'Brasiliensis'. They get huge but are prob the most aggressive too. 'Orangeheads' will top out at 6-7" max like 420 said and are the most colorful of the geos with 'Brasiliensis' being 2nd IMO.

Rapps has some Altifrons 'Rio Tapajos' I think. They are gorgeous and develop nice long streamers.

Balzanis are considered a cold water species but can survive in the typical 78-80 degrees. For longevity they need temps down to approx. 60-70 deg. for a couple of months every year and that will also induce breeding when you warm the tank back up.

I have two breeding pairs of Tapajos now and I'm always looking for more. 420, if you ever want to sell em then I'll take em off your hands!!!:D If anyone comes across some then let me know.;):)

Ill let u know if i want to sell the Fry, when these guys finally mate. Here one minor update pic.
My buddy got some red HUMPS and the day he brought them home, they were holding fry in their mouths. Weird how that works.
