Hoovering south of the ham
In the wild, they have an interesting relationship with Parachromis dovii. The small Central American cichlid Neetroplus nematopus compete with the Parrot Cichlid for nesting sites. Frustrated male Parrots with occasionally defend the fry of Parachromis dovii, which leads to more surviving fry. The natural food of mature P. dovii is N. nematopus. More P. dovii means fewer Neetroplus which equals more nesting sites for the Parrot Cichlid.

Nics are also called Parrot Cichlids. Did anyone know the above info I found on the net? That's pretty f***ing smart.

I do not think this is possible as parrot Cichlids "HOPLARCHUS PSITTACUS" are from south america. And Dovii are from central America so i dont think these two will see each other in the wild.

The "parrot cichlid" mentioned is not Hoplarchus psittacus, but Hypsophrys nicaraguensis. That's the problem with common names.

Wow thats really interesting. Im sure also that many a nic has met its fate in the jaws of el guapote........

haha el guapote loooves eating small fish.
and yeah ive read this happening too.
when my carpinte bred in the 230 they were too small to defend the territory, so my big white midas helped out which was real werid.

My be they had a 3 way relationship.

yea sorry i was thinking you were talking about the true parrot cichlid.

The confusion might have arisen from one of Hypsophrys Nicaruensis' common names the Macaw Cichlid. While a Macaw may indeed be an ornamental bird, this illustrates the problem with common names.

The Nicaraguans, Doviis, and neets all share the same habitat and each help out each other. The Nics help raise and protect the dovii fry from the Neets while the Dovii protects the Nics and their fry from the Neets and eat them as they are a food source. I say it's very cool how the two interact in the wild.
