I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a lighting setup that I could use for my tank that would allow me to see my nocturnal fish but that wouldn't scare it back into hiding? It wouldn't keep kept on all night, just for about ten-twenty minute intervals for me to be able to watch it move around a bit. I was thinking either a red or blue bulb might work? Or perhaps even a blacklight? Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

blacklight wont help you see your fish any as it gives off UV light (although it also gives off a small amount of very low wave length (400nm ish light that you can see)

what i used for moonlights was a string of blue christmas lights it really lookd like water under the moon and didn't bother my pleco who comes out alot at night

I bought 4 1500mcd, 120deg viewing angle white LEDs and 4 1200mcd, 120deg viewing angle blue LEDs and wired them up (with an appropriate resistor) to a 5v wall-wart. Works great, very bluish light.

There are things called Lunar aqualights
