Guys - Can nightcrawlers cause skin irritation. Tried feeding one to my rhom the other for the first time. I clearly handled it and was holding it in the water. Since then I have had this rash on my lower arm/wrist. Maybe it isnt the nightcrawler but that is the only thing I did different. I read about folks having allergies to bloodworms but couldn't find anything about nightcrawlers.

If it goes away then use some gloves when dealing with the night crawlers. To confirm its the night crawlers just don't use gloves.

Are they home grown night crawlers or the store bought kind?

I remember a couple of years ago, a member here, became allergic to aquarium water. He stated that the allergy was confirmed medically.

It all depends on the on the indivdual as a particular person can be or become allergic to a just about anything.

I'm curious if the store bought worms are treated with something and that is what is causing the skin reaction or maybe it's something in the worm bedding. Can you check with the seller or the distributor to see if they list anything on the packaging?

seems to me the point of contact. unless you rapped them around your wrist I am partial to thinking the water.

As stated, there are many documented cases of individuals allergic to the proteins in nightcrawlers. The fix is to either find an alternative or to use barriers (gloves, self-siphoning hoses, etc.) when handling the worms and whatever the worms come in contact with. Be aware that castings and water spots/spills containing the worm's cells may become airborne, when dry, and cause respiratory distress in person's hypersensitive to the worms.
