How many of the ray keepers out here are keeping nightcrawler colonies? I ordered a bunch from a place like a year ago, little over when I got my first pups. The place I ordered from does not seem to have their online site going any longer. They were the night crawlers you can keep at room temperature though.

Anyone have a good source for these (in the US)?

Anyone set them up to reproduce them?

I am just thinking by the looks of it I will have a fairly steady supply of pups and thinking having a colony going would not be a bad thing. The excess could just be fed to the adults.

Any thoughts? More hassel then it is worth?

I have been considering ordering in bulk myself

Vamptrev has a good source for worms not sure on details but you could get in touch with him

Np, If you want let me know if your considering placing an order. No reason all us MI ray keepers shouldn't save some money on shipping :) Not sure exactly how many I would want because space is limited for me

Once I get some pricing I will keep you posted. I know another midwest guy intersted possibly in some as well.

Red wigglers reproduce slot faster and are easier to get started. A little reading + Tupperware in the garage = ray food and fertilizer(worm casting)

That would be the red wigglers european and african nightrcrawlers that can handle warmer temps and can be raised in home a composter. Currently I am raising red wigglers and they are doing great at room temp.

There is really nothing to it, just get your container set up, get some dung and you are in the worm buisness. I am using buffalo dung because all the ranchers in my aerea use de-wormer on the cattle and that dung is un-usable.

Here is a pic of the 2 bins i have going but you can also diy these a lot cheaper.

Here is a link to the composting site that got me going http://vermicomposters.ning.com/

I buy 1000 canadian crawlers at a time. I keep them in 2 - large styro fish boxes in the shop fridge. I am usually run out before they go bad/dyeing (2 months)

I culture red wigglers, which do well at room temp. You don't need a fancy composter for them (or dung). A simple rubbermaid bin, some damp shredded newspaper and fruit and veggie kitchen scraps will do for food. I drop banana peels, leftover (wilted salad), apple cores, Halloween pumpkin, etc into the colony...

I haven't bought live for frozen food for my ~50 tank fishroom since I got the red wiggler worm culture going. I bought the original ones from a guy on Craigslist but there are plenty of other online sellers.

Can't imagine buying the quantity of worms that I use!
