Here&There
I have always used Canadian nightcrawlers from Wal-Mart's fishing section as the staple food for my aro, rtc & clown knife. I occasionally gave them feeders, but usually just nightcrawlers. They loved them and all of 'em let me feed them by hand. My question is this: is this the best/easiest nutritious staple for a MF? Are there any potential problems with using this method of feeding?

I feed my monsters night crawlers all the time. I even get the worms from Wal-mart as well. I have never had a problem with disease or parasites. I just make sure the worms are alive. I've heard that you should feed your fish some kind of pellet food first, then feed them "meat". The pellet is suppose to slow the speed at which the "meat" would pass through the digestive system. Seems logical to me so that is what I go by.

it depends on what the worms are eating on how good it will be.
Shrimp, smelt, beefheart, pellets, and other prepared foods are better and cleaner IME

What are some other foods that are nutritious and easier to keep than feeders? Also, can/should crickets from pet stores be used regularly? Are they very nutritious?

Varied diet is the best diet, I feed tons of worms, dillies and crawlers, to my Dats, all sizes, My Ray, and all my Geo's, oh and my Ornate I got. If u are concerned try to jam a few pellets in the worm and then let the fish eat it.

I use frozen shrimp from the grocery store, just thaw it and cut it into smaller pieces. I just picked up a frozen variety pack that came with squid, octopus, mussels, shrimp, some type of fish(made sure there was no salmon, heard it was very oily and wreaks havoc on water chemistry). I've tried crickets but my fish never bothered with'em. Like Rallysman said, beefheart, I haven't tried it yet same with chicken heart/gizzards. I use pellets as a staple though.

I feed crawlers on occasion. Like others said, the best diet is a varied diet. I think the best staple for most fish is pellets, and many other foods offered in moderation are great too. Nightcrawlers, frozen krill, ghost shrimp, brine, mysis, bloodworms, glassworms, insects, beef heart, daphnia, etc are all great foods that your fish may enjoy and benefit from depending on size and preference. Hey, weren't we going to create a forum for nutrition? LOL J/K

i use the same worms from walmart too!

Only thing i hate about them, is that they are HUGE. So i have to cut them up so everyone gets to eat.

crickets are good. If you can try get em some centipeds. But cut off their chompers before. They apparently give aros amazing red colouring. They sell em in asian aro shops in Hong kong. They're about 4 inches long and look nasty as hell

I used to feed wal mart worms to my rays, aro and dats but stopped and went with shrimps pellets smelts etc.... much better for your fish no risk of parasites in prepared foods.....
