Now that siquia and honduran red points are synonymous with nigrofasciata, let's see what locales are in the hobby.
So far what I know of (sources I know of cited):
Rio Los Almendros (true HRP, mine)

Rio Bagaces (mine)

Rio Tempisque

Rio Cabuya (from a thread on here somewhere)

Rio Mongo

Rio Claro (Ken Davis)

Lago Coatepeque (Jon Clark)

Rio Maria Linda (from German forum)

Rio Lagarto

Lake Xiloa (only picture I could get, from a German forum)

And then Lago Nicaragua, but I can't find the picture of it anymore. It was the weird solid grey one with the red eyes.
It seems you look in Costa Rican streams if you want the yellow male + grey female with blue and yellow fins/yellow belly strains, honduras for blue with red fins, nicaragua for the aquarium strain looking traditional ones.

had a bunch and introduced a bunch but don’t have any now, as for lake nicaragua i collected and passed around the strain from granada which definitely didn’t have red eyes i remember that much…

Why not just use squita like all the vendors do? Synonyms don’t mean use interchangeably, just means a fish was “thought” to be or misidentified as a different species.

Because they are still of different locales plus it's interesting to see the variety in one species

There have been several types from different locales over the years. Thanks for the nod on the coatepeques (I actually got them from N newworld ) at an ACA convention many years ago. I don't keep nearly as many as I used to, but I think i still have a male from Rio Panama (Rapps import a while back). Ken Davis used to have them from Rio Choloteca, but not sure if he still has them or not. The true HRPs were identified as Rio Danli for many years as well.

I find this aspect of the hobby incredibly interesting, thanks for posting! It seems like it's hard to find clear sources of info in one place when it comes to locality differences in fish. Once we move I'd like to set up an economical fish room focused mainly on collecting amatitlania, cryptoheros, and other small to medium sized central American cichlids.

You can definitely see the aquarium strains with alot of those traits, mixing them over the years has produced lots of washed out ones.

I'm pretty sure they're starting to put wild blood back into the aquarium strains, here's one I got from petsmart last year1633749526655.png1633749554202.png

I nicely colored up convict or hrp is a beautiful thing. This one is ridiculously pretty. Great fish

Also where does one go to find the Rio cabuya variant for sale? I see several of them with the large nuchals and flat faces like a flowerhorn.
