Ok i got my nikon and i can take some nice pictures but the monitor doesnt show what i'm looking at through the view finder. Anyone know how to turn that on?
what kind of nikon? if it's a dslr then it doesn't have "live view" like on a point and shoot. the screen is only for playback and setups. the new nikon d3 and d300 are going to come out with this feature though.
He just got a D40. Welcome to the world of DSLR. Get used to the conventional one, because like IS300zx said, the screen is only for setup and review. After a week it will feel more comfortable anyway.

If it's a DSLR your picture will only pop up on the LCD after you take it. You can't use it like a point and shoot, and hold it 2 feet from your face, and look at the LCD to take your pic.
The reason that you can't use the screen is because there is a mirror (that aims the light from the lens into the viewfinder) that sets in front of the CCD which captures the light.
