The nitrate level in my tap water is aorund 10ppm. I have down a bunch of water changes just to keep it @ 20ppm. Is there a filter that I can put on my tap water to remove nitrares from the start

R/O units will remove nitrates from tap water but they can be on the pricey side. Plus having to buy spare filters for them and minerals to replace what is taken out of the water. Is this city or well water? If it's city I would be getting ahold of your water company as that is a little high and see what they say. had mine hit a little over 10ppm once. Took a sample in and 2 days later they had found a problem. Now it's about 2-3 ppm. Last water report I got it was at 1.5 ppm

nitrates in tap water is normal. i think youll find it everywhere

Howdy,

The EPA level for drinking water is 10 mg/L nitrate as nitrogen = 44 ppm = 44 mg/L
(does not apply to well water). Having said that, 10 ppm isn't all bad. I have to fertilize my tanks with nitrates to keep my plants happy. You should try planted

Best options (other than changing your water like every day):

-Denitrator coil (can be expensive, time consuming, doesn't always work, and if it fails will be bad news bears)

-Lots of plants (way best choice)

-Nitrate absorbing resin (like nitrazorb; work great... but I try to not rely on products if I don't have to. In this case, it might work for you) Just get a tiny HOB and keep a mesh bag of this stuff in it. Will make changing it a lot easier. This is what I do for my phosphate resin in my planted tank.

R/O for nitrate remove only works if you have high enough pressure, and a good membrane. I used R/O and got almost no reduction in Nitrates. and my nitrates where only 5 out the tap.
