Can you pamper your fish with perfect tank water so much to a point that it becomes intolerate of any slight water pollution and dies?

Vicer versa, can you neglect a fish tank so much that the fish build up a tolerance for being able to survive even in your toilet water?

its bad when its over 50 ppm... fish begin to get sick around then... but yes nitrates are more tollerable from some fish then other.... especially species wise

What is the proper way to lower nitrates? Several small water changes(20-30%) or a few large ones(40-60%)?

I favor large water changes. However, you should build up to these. My fish are used to 90% water changes, and are comfortable enough to eat while I refill it.

If the fish are still alive, they do adjust their chemistry to a "dirty" tank. That's why folks that haven't changed their water in a long time & then clean out their whole tank & their fish die, say that the fish were better off w/o WC. That's called "Old Tank Syndrome". That's why any new fish they add, usually dies. They also don't live to their usual life expentancy & die younger, from diseases. If you haven't done a WC in a while, it is best to do frequent small WC (1-%), untill you have changes our about 50%, then go up to 25% for a few days & then 50%. Then keep up with at least 50%/week (I od more though).

No fish will tolerate ammonia well, but i have seen fish become very tolerant of high nitrates. Some of my customers have brought in water samples with nitrates over 100. Depends on the species. Just because a fish can tolerate pollution doesn't mean it should have to. I like to keep my nitrates at 20 or less.

Hahaha 100? You have good customers!

I used to see 250+ on a regular basis.

I should have said 100+, our test doesn't go any higher.
