What is a safe level of nitrate in ppm?

Depends what kind of fish and how well they tolerate nitrates.
For rays its 20 or below ppm. For cichlids, it can be higher.

Of course, the goal is to make nitrates as low as possible.

uhhh, i think most people say anything under 20 ppm is good. :)

Yeah 20 ppm is awesome. For rays its par for the course.

i didnt see your post, :). But yeah, mine always stay at zero, or atleast low enough that the test kit doesnt pick up 10 ppm.

Great stuff man. If your water is always pristine like that, then you know
you have good fish keeping skills. :)

How big is your tank, what and how many do you keep in it, What do you do to keep the nitrate at zero all the time?? Any tips??

Howdy,

I agree with the others that <20 mg/l is best. But keep in mind that the EPA drinking water standard is 10 mg/l as N, i.e. 45 mg/l nitrate. That means your tap water could already contain higher concentrations. Measurements by EPA even revealed concentrations as high as 2770 mg/l in some private wells. Check your tap water first. If needed, use RO water, or dilute it with such.

Well, to be fair, all of my fish are still really young and i keep them in a 350, so they don't really produce a lot of waste. What you want to do is make enough water changes so that you keep nitrates low

water from my tap used to come out with 20-30ppm and i had rays at the time.
it is ok now though but i test constantly to make sure.
