is there really a media that actually removes NITRATES????? I have never heard of something until today. Does it actually work with no ill effects to my large cichlids???? will it actually be a niticable difference where I can lower water changes???

Purigen. It will reduce nitrates, but reducing water changes is a bad idea. This product helps, it doesn't do the work for you. If there were products like that, fishkeeping would increase tenfold.

I posted in another forum about canister filters and noone replied so i will ask it here. My 150 jag breeding tank runs on 3 Aqua Clear 110's. In all my years I have always used Aqua Clears power filters and have never owned a canister. What could a canister do for me that my AC can't. Basicly why would I invest in these expensive huge boxes????

I like the AC's. I have never used canister because I have never had a reason to change. When I go larger, I am going wet/dry.

What are your water params? If ammonia and nitrites are at zero, then there is no reason to go with a canister. Nothing wrong with overfilration but most of the time it is not needed. I'm with ewurm though if you need more biological filtation go with a wet/dry sump you can build you own for alot cheaper than you can buy a canister.

Cannisters are quiet, and they have lots of space for a variety of media. They don't need (at least mine don't) to have the media cleaned as often. I have an Eheim cannister that takes care of biological filtering, and an AC 110 for mechanical filtering. I clean out the media of the AC every week. If I don't do that, the sponges start to smell (they're exposed to the air). The cannister just keeps on pumping week after week with no apparent ill effects. To answer your question, though, there really isn't a compelling reason to buy a cannister over an AC unless you want quiet.

water changes and good filteration is the best nitrate remover and the safest and healithiest way for your fish..

:iagree:

The way I understand it nitrates are just an indicator for the levels of other harmful compounds. We don't know if these magic resins take those out.

I have heard that this new "nitrate remover" only breaks down nitrate into a compound that is not readable by a test kit. The compound that results is still just as harmful as nitrates, we just can't measure it.
