Which nitrate removing products are people using? I've looked at AP's Nitra-Zorb, Kent Nitrate Sponge and Seachem De-Nitrate. Any input, besides more waterchanges or more waterchanges? Does it make any sense to use resins or nitrate removing products or would I be better off investing in a drip or auto waterchanger system?

drip system would be better... removes nitrates and replaces minerals etc... in the tank

I really feel that the nitrate absorbing filter media products should be used as a last resort. For instance, they should really only be used if you are not going to be able to perform regular water changes for one reason or another. Those that live in the Southeast, which is experiencing a drought right now, may benefit from these products.

My sense is that only anion-exchange resins will exhibit any significant effectiveness in lowering nitrate concentrations, if your desire is to use a resin of some type. Although, I should mention that I have never tried any of the products you listed (but some of them may, in fact, be ax media). Of course, the performance of the ax resin will be diminshed if salt or other anionic species are present in your tank. WCs are your most potent option. Not only because they will dramatically lower nitrates, but there are other water contamination issues which are best managed by water changes. For example, phosphates. In addition, there are many organic contaminants being introduced into the water by fish defecation, bacterial death (turnover) etc., which require routine removal.

Thanks for the valuable input everyone! Right now, I'm still doing waterchanges to control Nitrates. I may use Purigen (any tricks or caveats on using this, besides "read the instructions"??) as a temporary solution when I go on vacation for 2 weeks and the drip system as a long term solution. Can anyone point me to an example of a good drip system?

search drip system or go to the articles forum and look @ the ones neoprodigy made... ill be using dosematic set up very soon...

An auto water changer, purigen, a good filter and regular tank maintenance will provide a very healthy tank.

Four fantastic facts for fabulous fishkeeping! ...So you're saying it might be good to use purigen as a permanent component of the filtration system?

It definitely will not hurt.
