Nitrate!!!!!!!

Have you tested it your self or are you relying on a lfs. Those readings would worry me if they are right. What ever you are doing for testing I would get a second opinion with a different test kit..

Id be real worried by that nitrate reading, Ive only seen that when first cycling a tank.

I just did another test with a differant kit and it showed 160 ppm! WTF ! this tank has been up for 4 yrs never a problem. The level of nitrate has steadily been riseing over the last couple of weeks.I do a 25% water change weekly vacuum half of the sand every 2 weeks haven't changed any thing except for the fish. This has really puzzuled me !

Bump those water changes to 50% or higher until your nitrates drop below 60 ppm. Did you test your water source to see if it might be contributing to your nitrates?

What exactly do you have this tank stocked with. How big are they and how big is the tank?

Ok lets take some action.... start doing 50% water changes for the next 3 or 4 days and see what your readings are.

Also do what icthyophile said and test your water supply. Do you use any additives?

What size tank and what size and kinds of fish are in it. Have you added anything new?

Vacuum the substrate
clean the filter media
do water changes
test your water supply -Anne

... but not all at once, or you will "wipe out" all beneficial bacteria.

It's a 55 with 2 aqua tech 350's 2in of black moon sand. I have 4 1'' redbellys and a 3in raphel cat .My water out of the tap is between 20-30ppm. I have a well. I don't use any addatives. I think I have figured out what the problem is I have kept cichlids in the tank for the last couple of years and I never fed flake. Since I have had the rbp's I've fed nothing but tetra color flakes and minced shrimp.Amonia-0,nitrite-0,GH-150,KH-140,pH-7.1.I did a 50%today and I will repeat for the next 3 days and I will vacuum all the sand but I'm not going to mess with my filters I just changed half of my cartriages 2 weeks ago. THANKS for all the help I will keep you posted on my dilemma
