I'm assuming you're using one of the liquid test tube kits? Those are the only accurate ones. Like the previous poster said-you don't actually 'need' it at '0' for any reason. I do keep my tanks real low in nitrates. The Oscar tanks never get above 7-8 ppm. If you're a perfectionist like me (apologies to all) it's easy to keep it that low with two 60-70% water changes a week and understocking your tanks. Most people will agree that under 20 ppm is 'good enough' for most fish. To answer your question, if it's at 10 ppm now you can do another 50% water change tomorrow to get it down to 5 ppm.
