Hi all having some major issues with nitrate in my 250 litre tank. I've got an API water test kit and test once a week when I do my water change. The nitrate is round 80-100 ppm and struggerling to get it down. Tested the tap water and it is high so have converted to ro slowly so I don't shock my fish but still not coming down any suggestions???

I would do a couple large water changes to get it down, and keep using the RO, that should help alot. It's hard to say exactly what might be wrong. Whats your stock?? You could possibly be overstocked or maybe you're overfeeding???? And whats your filtration like?? You say you do a weekly water change also so maybe you can increase the amount you change out.

You say your tap water is high in nitrate. Are you on a well? I believe that muninciple water has limits on nitrate levels. You might want to call the water dept. and see what those limits are. I think there are some nitrate reducing chemicals out there but I have never had a nitrate problem that a water change could'nt handle.

My stock is 4 boasmani rainbow, 3 precox rainbow, 6 clown loaches (small 1-2inch), 6 harlequin rasbora and 3 bristlenose catfish. I don't have a well its high because we have had a lot of rain, I have been in contact with the water company but they say deal with it which is rude. That's why I went to ro, I do about a 25 litre water change every week using 25% tap water to the ro.

Oh my filtration is a tetratec ex700 and a fluval 3plus. I feed a pinch of tetra prima, catfish pellets and an alge wafer once a day.

the pothos plant is a good idea.they will use nitrates to grow, they are not aquatic plants.you can secure them to the back of the tank roots in/leaves out of the water.search here on MFk for ways to attach them.they also make products that can be used in your filter, some rechargeable.seachem makes some....thing

Your only doing a 10% water change every week? What exactly is the levels of nitrate in your tap water?

Yes 10% every week. I'm still fairly new to the hobbie so done allot of reading and asking at the shops. The tap water varies from 40 - 80 depending on the amount of rain fall hence why I've changed to RO but I still mix the RO with tap water 25%
