So I just decided to test my tap water after remembering some threads. I am frequent with water changes on all my tanks but have realized that nitrates were always difficult for me to get down. Today I found out why, see pic. Is there anyway to reduce nitrates in the tanks in such a situation where continuous water changes won't bring it down? Thanks20150810_204755.jpg 20150810_204722.jpg

Honestly from the pic of the reading I was thinking your nitrates were off the charts. Imo you are doing an outstanding job, btw what type of fish are you keeping?

What I mean even with the nitrates coming out of the tap your managing it, nitrates get build up quickly and not all people inwill do wc's to keep it from getting out of control.

O well thank you. But I still have a problem......Since there are nitrates in my tap, I can NEVER lower my nitrates since I will only always be adding. Infact, the best I could do it only match the tap. Know of any other solutions to lower it?

I've heard of hobbyists using denitrater's, I personally don't know anything about them personally.

I just goggled the Las Vegas water quality report, in the normal tap water, nitrate is usually below 1ppm, and the highest detect reading was 6.2ppm, so I believe either your test is suspect, your glass ware is tainted, or some other factor.
If you scroll down a few pages you will find among 25 other chemicals tested, you will find nitrate. The MCL is left, and test results to the right.

why does 10ppm look darker than 20ppm on these api test kits... really annoys me!?

uk tap water is 40ppm, we just carry on keeping it close to that, i have heard of people breeding rays in our tap water and lots of people are keeping discus. just keep up with your changes and forget is the easiest way, either that or buy some rechargeable nitrate removal resin or use lots and lots of plants in your tank and in a large sump with a light.

never tested mine but most of my tanks sit lower than 40ppm so i just did and im at 0 out the tap, justin you need to move out to Wales lol mountain water
