Hi all

Recently i had my new 8ft tank setup and cycling for a week, i have a 4ft tank and a 2ft tank to upgrade from, after a week the 4ft tank's filter stopped working and i decided to put the water and media from the old to the new tank to speed up cycling.
Ive put the fish in the day after, tested the water and it was all ok
ph - 8
ammonia - nil
n03 - .3
after another few days i put the water and the fish from the 2ft tank into the 8ft also and this was been ok for a week,

After just over a couple of weeks the ph is good at 7.5 ammonia is still nil but the nitrite is up to over 1!
The water also is getting greenish! whats the problem here and what should i do to remedy it.

Thanks all.

Need a little more info...what fish did you move into the new tank?

What size is tank....full dims or gallons...? I would assume since you said 8ft this is a 225G tank, but we all know if I assumed, I would make an *ss out of u and me.

How long had the filter been without working? A biofilter will crash over time if there is no water movement across the media...some immature filters can die off in hours, while others may take a tad longer.

But, your tank is definetly still cycling. The seeded filter did not have enough beneficial bacteria to seed the entire new tank fully...considering that you increased the bioload the filter is now seeing when you combined the fish from both tanks. All tanks will go through some sort of cycle when new fish are added, though most are minor and quick, and the owners don't even notice them.

What did you do to cycle the new tank?

your right, its a 280gal 70% filled
the filter would of stopped about half day before i transfered the media, at that stage ammonia in the 55gal was already starting to come up,

putting the old water some of the gravel and media should of sped things up a bit though right

Adding old water is only adding old waste. There is no good bacteria in there.

Yeah...the gravel and media will help...the water will not do much.
