Just did a water test today and my readings are finally clear. Inspite of what some of the bleeding heart fish police at another board (which I will not mention) - my guy at my LFS was spot on. He told me 2 months or so after I started the tank that it would be cycled commpletely and ready to go.

Well - just about a week over the 2 month period now and my tank is reading zero in all the readings of concern.

My question is - now what? What are the next things to start to look for? He said to wait for 2 more weeks before I start my weekly water changes of 5/10g's.

Any advice would be grately appreciated.

now that it is cycled start checking for nitrates.
also keep your biological filtration alive. or your nitrites will go up again.

yeah I am just about done with them also. I made a comment about tank temp being much less critical for natives from the Northeast because of the seasonal temps they endure and there is always the one know-it-all member that has to take exception and start a debate like the guy is going to put his tank on the stove for 2 hours a day. I'm tired of it. Of course the knock they put on this board is that we are all tank-overstocking savages that don't care about fish welfare. Bunch of drama queens. An isolated few make them all look bad.

you're making me curious what the other place was! lol

You know it's funny you mention that because on the 25th this month I changed out one of the 4 carbon filters in my Emperor 400's (I have 2 on my 90g). I wonder if that one filter change is what made this happen? I doubled up the slots too - took the one out that was 2 months old, and put 2 new ones where it was at in the 2 available slots per side.

My idea is to put 2 more in tomorrow in the other Emperor, and continue this trend ever week until all slots are filled with 2 new carbon filters in each side of the slots. I was then planning on leaving them in there for the remainder of the year, and starting that process again in January. Is that too long? I've heard that the carbon compounds in those filters and the benefits from there less within a couple of weeks, but that they then become a good bed for the good bacterias (and polish the tank up nicely at the same time).

Any thoughts on whether that is hogs h i t, or truth?

hmmmm me too.. PM me. i wannaknow!!

OK - I won't mention names (because my guy at my LFS was curious to know too, and when I told him he just laughed and said "that place has a reputation for being the bleeding heart society that it is), but their initials are "AC".

I'm sure you guys know who I'm talking about, and Gunther - I saw that thread where the guys were complaining about the overstocking of Ciclids in that Petco or Petsmart tank, and crying about how they were being tortured, and how we out here are just as bad. Someone needs to tell them to STFU, and get a life IMHO.
