In testing all of my tanks, they are all showing a slight nitrite elevation (0.05). I wasn't sure what was causing this, as I do water changes, my tanks are planted, and I keep up on plant maintainence as well. Well, out of straight curiousity, I tested my tap water....same reading (0.05). So, in doing water changes, I'm adding the same things I'm taking out...I hate to add more chemicals, and have ordered new filters, but is there anything I can do, other than hope?

No fish illness or weird behaviours...0 ammonia.

I appreciate any advice.

Really the only thing you can do is "truck" your water in or get an R/O unit, if you were to get an R/O you would have to add back the trace elements and vitamins, it can be done but it could be arguas.....Maybe someone else would have some interesting pre-filtering, aging ideas, but not me....Sorry.....D

I truly appreciate the resonse. I am considering that maybe my test kit is showing something off...maybe would account for this slight reading. I have sent a sample to a friend at Petsmart, just to have them check it, and also will be taking samples to a few other LFS and see what they come up with. I really hope this is a bad reading and not a problem I'll have for a long time.

Thanks again for the response, I have been concerned about this.

Make sure to let us know how things turn out.....I live out in the sticks and have had Nitrate issues of my own with gound water ect, so I feel your pain....Good luck...D

Well, I had it tested at Petsmart today, Ammonia very very slightly evevated (just added a couple of new fish to the tank that was tested), Nitrites 0, and Nitrate very slightly elevated....I take this as a sign that my test was faulty....and am so relieved. Thanks for your help...this had me trying to scramble to find the money for an R/O system, which isn't possible right now.

I am glad things turned out OK!!
