So bf was complaining all day that my tank is stinking up the house. I didn't believe him until I got home.

Seems like the Thera+A that I fed for the past three days has left a rotten garlic stench in my filters. I'm running an AC110, Penguin 350, and Eheim 2217 on my 75. The HOBs seem to be the stink pots. I rinsed the fluffy top layer I use on the ac, and the inserts on the 350. That helped, but it still smells and I don't want to overly clean and lose all my BB from that stuff.

THis is the first time I've used the thera+A and I like the idea of garlic every once in a while to keep the fish healthy and any endogenous gut bugs in check. However, bf already barely tolerates the tank, and this is not helping. :( He takes precedence over the fish, so...

Is this a normal after effect?
Anything to mitigate the rotten garlic smell???
Any other suggestions on schedule to feed/"dose" the thera+A ?????

I have the same problem, the wife complain about my tank smell. I am plannin to stop using it and switch to more "smell" friendly food :)

Yes, one of the potential side effects from feeding the TherA formula can be a noticeable garlicky odor. Some people find it offensive, some don't notice it at all. In my tanks the only way that I could smell it, is if I placed my nose down over an open tank, and took a big whiff. :)

Having said that, all of the various NLS formulas contain garlic, so if the mega dose of garlic in the TherA formula is causing an issue, simply switch to one of the other NLS formulas.

i need to update my response here .... i fed the thera a exclusive for a couple days and got the stanky stank . also it was worse on my tank with hob vs canister , but it was enough to stink the room up noticeably .
i would say only use the thera a as a little treat here and there and stick to other foods for the staple diet .
carbon does help with the smell though . just don't leave it for too long .

Yeah I only feed the thera A occasionally other wise it makes the tank smell its even worse when you have 12 tanks in the same room :irked: I use the 1mm cichlid formula as the staple.

If you can manage to stink up an entire room in a couple of days, you're either overfeeding, or have a LOT of tanks, a very small room, poor ventilation, or all of the above. :)

I've fed it to 3 tanks all at the same time (total of 300+ gallons), all with HOB filtration, and even after a full week I never smelled anything noticeable, unless I had my face hanging over the open water. No complaints from the wife, or anyone else that was in that room while I was using the TherA.

There are a LOT of people that feed the TherA formula exclusively, so either they all have a very poor sense of smell, or they're all Italian. :D

Thanks for the support, ideas and laughs! lol... bf is here to stay, so I've stopped the thera-a for now. The carbon really helped get rid of the smell, as did a large water change.

RD: Don't know about overfeeding; I try not to!!! I only have the one 75 gal and a 20 gal in the room, which is a sun room and has multiple french doors, so good air flow, and large area... It did smell all over the house (open floor plan 2000+ sqft) so I'm still blaming the food! Maybe your tanks have better BB than mine and they use the garlic too! ;)

I'm going to use the Thera-a sporadically and see if I can sneak it into their diet without anyone noticing. lol :)
