I have a 55g tank thats housing 2 turtles. I'm in the process on trying to find them a home. I like to use the tank to thin out some of my fish in my 75. but i noticed last night that the 55g that house the turtle dont have a center brace. right now its only filled about half. but my concern is does it need the center brace? If so its no biggy to me, i'll end up letting the tank go with the turtles and getting another in its place. the tank was giving to me with the turtles and looks as if it never had a center brace in the first place. i just dont want to fill it all the way up to have it bust a seam. so its a standard 55g, so do you think it needs the brace??

Whether or not it needs a brace would really depend on the thickness of the glass. Does the tank in question have plastic trim? If so, does it look as though there used to be a center brace?

im not to sure how thick the glass is, i think 1/4 in but ill have to check when i get home. It does have a plastic rim, but it does not appear to ever have a center brace. the plastic does not appear broken or cracked where the center brace would go. it looks as if it was never molded in the plastic rim. it is clean and smooth. no cracks

At 1/4", it sounds like it was a terrarium. I wouldn't trust it to hold when full of water.

I have a 65 tall that has no center brace and never did. I bought this tank close to 20 years ago and it still does not leak. The glass is thicker on it than my brand new 125 that has a brace. Even the plastic trim on the 65 is in 4 pieces. Now that they mold the trim in one piece tank companys in general can make tanks with thinner glass. 1/4 is not thick enough to fill and trust. 1/2 inch is.

You might be able to get away with 3/8" glass, but the 1/4" is definitely a no-go.

i was thinking the same thing. 3/8" MIGHT be just fine.

To be honest 3/8 is fine, my 90 has a center brace but its broken at the moment. Obviously I'm in the process of getting a new top brace with the center brace. But my tank has been full for over 3 months while the brace has not been there and its held fine (hopefully it stays for a bit longer). It doesn't even really bow...if its 3/8 you should be able to get away with it
