im new to african cichlids but i would like one for my 40gal. tank so i can stick to my african theme. currently i have a senagal bichir and an african brown knifefish in there and im hoping for another bichir and obviously an african cichlid to fill up the space at the top of the tank a little more. any suggestions on a cool little african cichlid that can stay in a 40 for life but wont get eaten by my bichir some day?

the fish you've already mentioned, even without another cichlid added to the mix, should in no way shape or form be kept in a 40 gallon for life. your tank is just too small, even for what you already have

That's a nice tall drink of truth. Carefull now, might be a little hard to swallow.
2 Senegals in a 40 is maxing it. For the kind of set-up you're looking for I'd suggest a 75gl tank.

For a 40 gallon African setup, I would stick with Tangs. Shell Dwellers or Featherfins.

A lot of featherfins get way too big for a 40gal. I wouldn't be recommending any fish for this tank though, because as already stated, its already fully stocked.
