Ive been running a tank for several months now with no filter so far. It has a tiny powerhead and I do waterchanges twice a week (25%). The tank was clear at first, then the brown algea came in, went away and now the water seems clear (except for the debris fish kick up). I have some plants in there with bamboo and added more driftwood. Anyone have a tank with minimal filters?

what kinda fish u got in it and how big is it

so far theyre all babies. Its my growout tank for them. 1 ATF, 5 gachuas, 4 geophagus, 2 giant danios, 1 congo tetra. The tank is right next to my bed, so I like not having to sleep with a noisy filter.

If I were you i'de put a small filter in just to suck up some debris from plants and fish, but if you have alot of life plants and the water is circulating it should be fine (but it might get dirty from the poopey  )

i would get one for sure i love atf and have a couple trust me u want him to get big. just spend the extra to get a quite filter there are a lot out there. or at least get a power head and rig up a under gravel filter or something but. if i were u i would have some filtration of some sort to be safe. bc if u love ur fish u want the best for them. right now there prob livinging in L.A. so they will live but the air isnt to healthy so move to the mountains. so move your fish to the mountains. well its up to. anyway i hope this makes sence im drunk and just want to tank. but good choice in fush and good luck with the atf and post pics

I've read an experiment a few years back where a tank was setup w/o filters, and the only thing done to it was frequent water changes, like 2x a week. The water parameters were fine so long as the stocking level wasnt too high. If you can do it consistently, than thats great, but if you miss a couple, a filter whould give you a buffer on it. Even a sponge w/ a powerhead below the surface would help the bioload alot, plus the noise would be minimal.
Good Luck

:iagree: true true u want to be safe :grinyes:

well I do have a powerhead under the surface, it keeps the surface moving. Im always on my waterchanges, cant sleep if I dont do one. Took some pictures of the tank, Ill upload as soon as the battery on the camera charges.

u sould like me when i sleep. well there are ways to turn ur power head to something like a filter. but if u ever plan on being busy or gone then get a filter. if u dont have a life like me and water changes keep u up at night then u prob are fine
