here, according the cop I was speaking to, the government sends you an email threatening to cut your internet if caught again.

thats what they are starting to do here to. a couple of warnings then your isp stops your service.
songs are so cheap now, some (though not many) are going for free on amazon. its stupid to risk paying thousands in fines for a song that costs the whole of 29p especially when they started going after the private user instead of the large scale profiteering pirates.

i did like that quote about her not caring about the fine amount cos they will never get it due to her limited resources. i will never understand why courts fine people such large amounts when its obvious they will never be able to pay it in their lifetime.

luckily she didnt get jail time, since its clear she cant pay..

sometimes that happens - you cant pay -well, you make it up by serving time instead..

Well, it doesn't matter if you have your shared folders on or not. When you download from a seed (or peer), the gov't has servers setup to host the files, when you download from that seed from the gov't, they have your IP. Bingo bango, you get sent a little 'slap on the hand' letter from them. If you get caught again, you get fined.

That's why I stopped doing it.
Really, it's cheaper to buy the song than worry about fines/whatever.

Downloading from anything other than usenet is idiotic. Usenet has been around since the beginning of the internet and its still the best and fastest way to download anything.

That may still happen. On my way home from work there was some new story on the radio of settling for $3 and jail time.

I'm kind of on the fence on this. She is definitely guilty, there is no doubt about that. But the fines are utterly ridiculous. $80k for a song I can get off of iTunes for 99 cents? That's just asinine.

Also, she had 1700 songs in her share folder. That's $136 million in possible fines.

They don't need your HDD to get you in trouble. All they have to do is catch you as an uploader or downloading from them. This is why I use torrents...
