I notice that in a lot of videos (especially of larger tanks) that I see circulating the net- many of the tanks do not have any gravel or sand or anything at the bottom. just the bare glass. Is there any reason for this? I always thought that the gravel was an important part of the tank because it holds lots of bacteria and helps create a the eco system in there.

I asked this same question before and it basically was personal preference. Easier clean up, and some fish dont need any substrate. Just up the filter size to make up for the BB that would be lacking

thanks- I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered about that. My various fish in the past have always seemed to enjoy the gravel and rooting around in it.

Bare glass can be useful in hospital tanks or in grow out tanks with fish that are tricky to get eating correctly

It is also very practical if you don't have time to gravel vac on a regular basis

But IMO tanks with substrate will always look better/more natural

Wrastlin' turds ain't much fun on a bunch of pokey rocks. Way better to do that on a clean floor, I reckon.

why does no gravel help with picky eaters?

and also.. what do people with planted tanks do about gravel vac? like.. the tanks with a carpet of moss? a little off topic but just popped in my head

I hope that the no gravel is ok with the fish, and that they are happy... making things easier for cleaning shouldn't outweigh what the fish like. But I've never tried no gravel so.. I don't know...
