why when i look thru all the pics of the datnoid tanks they all have no substrate on the bottom... are they like discus and need extremely clean water to thrive... or is it just some peoples preference to keep no substrate?

they do need clean water, and bare bottom is really easy to keep clean plus it looks nice :D

Like filiportela said, they do need good water conditions, and bare tanks are easier to maintain so it's pretty common to see.

I personally prefer substrate in my tanks, so I use sand. The waste can't work its way to the bottom as quickly as it can in gravel, so it's a little easier to vacuum it out. I have a few tanks with gravel and it is much more intensive when I'm doing water changes to make sure I get all the waste out.

Long story short...it's a preference thing.

allrite cool.. i just use silica sand on my tanks

I think for the most part is because of the size potential. Most dat tanks are very large. Its just a pain to buy that much substrate and clean/maintain it. But red and light natural color substrate brings out beautiful color in dats.

verry intresting point u have there
but this is my life... i buy and sell and take care of fish... i dont mind doin a 10% water change on my 120 gal every 2 days and gravel vaccume every weekend. i enjoy takin care of the fish

Haha, cool. I love fish also. I cant live without them. But as a dedicated dat keeper, I do 100%+ water changes, once or twice a week. Plus with the strong 1000g+ gph filtration I run on each tank, I prefer not to use substrate as it would probably wind up in the filter(dats kick a lot of stuff up in the water column as they swim). Dats require extremely good water quality and lots of filtration. I only run substrate if its a dedicated plant tank. And even then I usually just go with Wood and anubias.

Nice...sounds like the perfect conditions for datnoid fever. :headbang2

I'm pretty much on the same schedule as you mentioned above. If there is one thing I learned from using sand substrates it's to set your intakes a little higher than you would with bare-bottom or gravel tanks...that way you won't take in as much particle dust from the dats stirring everything up.

Do you do a couple of 50% changes, or move the fish to another tank or something?

I try to do 30-40% every 4-5 days along with a gravel vac. I've got sand in my 80g and 40g tanks, but I'm think about using tiles in the big tank I'm planning as I hate the way a bare-bottomed tank looks.

cool thanks for teh help guys.. i picked up another datnoid today. hes abit bigger then the outhers closer to 2 inch. and goin to get a ghost knife tonite!!
