today i finally set up my idea for a home made filter, and after hours everything is fine but i hold my breath. heres a few pics it took me a few days to make and cost me about £35 in materials but it holds the same media and sponge as my 2080 pro 3 eheim. so in theory should be able to filter a tank thats about 250 gallons. thats all good in theory but how do i test this? any ideas guys? the water flow is far faster and has a head of about 8 ft in total with no power loss at all. heres a few pics

yeah pretty much the problem i found was pressure. its pretty much a sump that sealed to keep the pressure up and obviously uses less space than a sump

I don't think pressure and media is the whole picture behind ehiem's effectiveness. Its also eliminating by-pass...and increasing dwell time. If you could ensure all water going in does not just find the easiests way out then the filter is good.
Maybe if you add an underground gravel filter with a small power head to run it in reverse?
Use filter baskets which are really snug along the edges, so water does not just flow up the side but must pass underneath the baskets and enter media.
Instead of dripping flow over media, bring the inlet underneath so water is forced up into media if you have a 8" head.
Lots of stuff you can do to make it better.
Anyways, just my opinion. I'm too lazy to try...

great advice CT i will have to sit down and make some revisions for the next model. so in short you reckon holding the water in the filter as long as possible is the key? surely the only way you can do this is to slow the flow but somehow increase the tourqe of the water pump?

you will need to put in some inline shutoff valves close em till you get a reduced amount of flow this is crucial as the bacteria requires some time to eliminate waste also adding a air injection to the intake side will increase colony growth and speed up the waste consumption

where did you get those containers what application are they for i could use them my self

i made them! all fixed with tensol which apart from one air leak worked very well.
