i have high levels of both and i was just wondering how to drop them i have done 2 95% water changes the last two days, and cleaned the ^%$# out of the filter and replaced the pre filter the carbon and part of the other media. no fish in their i moved them to another tank for the time being. plez help i need to get my cichlids back in their tank so i can move fw on my angel fish breeding project.:irked:

You shouldn't be showing nitrites at all which means your tank is probably not cycled. How did you clean filters? they should be dipped a few times in tank water that you are removing during a wc. It sounds like your going to have to continue doing those large wc's until your bacteria reestablish.

Or you can do a instant cycle again by adding in tetra safe start into your filter when you put back in your fish, then don't do a wc for 48 hours while you let the bacteria settle would be the fastest way, you can pick it up at petsmart.

Unless the filter's flow is significantly reduced, filters should not be touched(other than regular replacement of carbon, if you use carbon).

Filter media should occasionally be cleaned. Just not vigorously scrubbed

oh i didnt scrub it i just ran some water over it

How long has the tank been setup?

Tap water will kill the BB, thats why tank water is reccomended.

Top fin? U always need to treat ur water with dechlorinator! Try prime, cheaper and better!

High nitrites can be a few things but idk w/o knowing how long its been setup!
