Hello,

I'm going to be setting up a 72x30x24 Freshwater aquarium and looking to get some advice on how to lower the overall noise of the sump/return pumps.

1. When plumbing the system I can try to use 45 degree angle fittings instead of 90 degree fittings where possible - anything else?

2. Been looking for an anti-vibration pads that would be safe for aquarium use under a return pump - but I have had no luck! Anyone know of any good products *UK products/able to get them in the UK would me amazing.
- I have seen that some people use plain egg crate, or those pyramid non stick fat draining oven pads. Anyone know of any item they 'Trust' and had luck with?? P.s that can be bought in the UK

3. Would it be worth sound proofing the inside of the cabinet, or not? I am aware that it could drastically increase the temperature under there, which could be bad.

Thanks everyone!

Here is an unconventional idea. Get some fishing wire, tie it around your pump in a way that you can suspend it in the water. If it's not touching the sump it can't vibrate. Maybe you can even suspend it from above from the cabinet.

Maybe for plumbing where ever possible use PEX because it's flexible and you don't need to make turns?

Not sure about availability in the UK but I run two Jebao DCP 8000’s on my 220. They are completely silent. I use 1” vinyl tubing to run them up to the returns on the tank. Then I use 1.5” vinyl tubing on the overflows and I run a herbie style overflow system. The whole setup is so quiet that you can’t hear a thing while standing right next to it, and that’s while it’s running about 1600 gph (about 6000 lph).

I don't think 45 vs 90 will really help. I think the suggested DC pumps and other DC pumps are good options.

I run two DC pumps and it's quiet sitting in my living room. All with PVC plumbing. I think the pumps are key to being relatively silent.

on my last build i used silicone pads under the pump and anywhere the plumbing touches the stand where it's secured.

look on google for silicone pot holders.20141029_123552.jpg the one i got was hexagon shaped and had a honeycomb pattern. very soft. I've had one submerged for 3 years with no issues. i guess it's aquarium safe? your mileage may vary.

I second the Jebao's. I have two DCP 10000s (running them only at around 35% each) but they are completely silent as previously mentioned. I also even have them hard plumbed with PVC all the way through (some use vinyl tubing to cut down noise) and they're still silent.
