i've got a brand new eheim 2217 filter and no matter what i try i can't get it to run quite, i've bled the air out of it as per the eheim instructions, ive tried shaking it, running it on it's side and still it's noisy.
i wouldn't say it's mega noisy but i've had a rena xp3, fluval ex 1200 , and a aquaone 1050 and they have all been almost silent.
the noise is a kind of rattle just like you get when there is air trapped and i can't get anymore air out, i've also stripped the canister and checked the impeller and shaft and they all look to be ok, any ideas please :)

How long have you been running it? You have a Rena, so I'm sure you saw the same thing I did when setting mine up. That is, that it has a ton of tiny air bubbles at first? The impeller on this canister may be on the opposite side... making more noise when clearing out the micro-bubbles. I say let it run a few days, and if the sound does not quiet down, then I'd look for something else. While its running, you might also want to check the input and output hoses. If the seal isn't perfect, then it will make all sorts of noise... but I really doubt thats the problem.

You really need to be sure that the impeller and shaft are seated properly. Watch it when it pumps the water back into the tank if you do not see any bubbles in the return tube then air is not your issue.

If it's not trapped air or a broken impeller shaft, it might be the top lattice screen bouncing against the underside of the pump head.

How much and what type of filter media are you using in this filter? If there is any empty space in the filter, this may allow the top lattice screen to bounce up and down a bit.

Was the filter packaging unopened when you got it? If not, someone else may have tampered with the parts prior to you getting it. Just asking.

it's been running now for about 3 weeks and it's not getting and quieter, i've checked all the hose fittings and they are all tight so i don't think there is any air getting in there and there are no signs of any air bubbles in the hoses.
deeda might have a point as i did remove the top carbon pad i just left it out so maybe the top lattice screen is vibrating about, i'll try putting a bit more media in there to see if it helps :)

damn ,tried adding slightly more media but it's just the same, i'm going to contact the store where i purchased it from and see what they say.

I have 3 2217s and 2 were noisy from the start and the 3rd is very quiet, i am not sure why maybe a qc problem?
