Alright, I have a few questions regarding my HOB filters. I just set up my new (to me) 33 gallon tank in my room over the weekend and last night was my first night sleeping in my room since and boy was that not fun. Before this tank i've had 3 other tanks in my room the largest of which was a 225. All of these tanks made some amount of noise but it was at least quite enough that I could deal with it and get myself to sleep at night. But last night was brutal.

On my tank I have two filters. I have an aquatech 20-40 HOB filter that came with the tank (just running this for extra filtration) and I have an Aquaclear 70/300 as the main filter which I purchased used, seperatly after I bought the tank. The aquatech still makes a tad bit of noise but it is strictly from the waterflow into the tank (and maybe a lil vibration but nothing serious) however the aquaclear's motor seems to be making quite some noise. Sounds like its half burned out. I would normally just assume that the motor wasn't in the best shape and buy a replacement motor however I've had 2x other aquaclears in the past that were both purchased used and both had the same problem, making that annoying loud motor sound. The last time I had this problem I just scraped them and bought a canister filter, however, that is not an option at the moment due to my current funds.

Here are a few questions:

1) Anyone know why the motor is making this sound? (is it actually old and burning out , meaning my last ones were too? or is this a generic problem with aquaclears?)
2) Any way I can quite this down without a replacement motor or is that basically my only option?
3) To cut down on the sound of water hitting water .. is filling the tank up more the only solution?
4) How beneficial is the aquatech to the tank in all honestly? Are the benefits miniscule enough that I can just take it out to cut down on some water sounds?
5) any other general techniques people have had success with to cut down on the sound of any part of their tank? I'd like to get my whole set up as quite as possible for getting to sleep at night.

Thanks in advance! I'm also running a tetra whsiper 40 (brand new) on the tank.

i have the ac 20, 50, 70, and 110

the ac 50 is the only one suitable for a room that you will be sleeping in.

all the other ones are way to loud and make rattling sounds.

can anyone else confirm this? I was actually going to buy an aquaclear 50 brand new as opposed to the ac70 but a good used local price made me revise and go with the 70 for extra filtration but I'll be disappointed if it was infact a bad choice. anyone have an ac70 that is fairly silent minus the water sound? If so that'd be great because I will just buy a replacement motor.

Take the impeller out of the motor housing and take the impeller apart. Run a brush through the bladed part of the impeller. Ac's are notorious for building up gunk in that area. Also while you have the impeler out soak the motor housing with vinegar(to break down any scale--I do this with any used ac I buy). Take a piece of fine emery paper and lightly polish the magnet end of the impeller as well. Make sure you rinse everything before you reassemble.. Your ac should run as good(and as quiet) as new..

so you are saying it is possible for this filter to be quiet again? I just want to make sure that I've just had bad luck and its not actually a problem with ac's being this loud. as long as I can fix it then thats perfect. I will try that when I get home ^.

Thanks

Anyone else with options incase that doesnt work?

It should work..It's worked for me countless times on used AC110 filters..

Good luck,

i have every size ac as well (1x20,2x50,1x70,2x110). the 20, 1 of the 50's, the 70 and one of the 110's are noisy, it's really hit or miss! the best thing i can recommend is firmly pushing the metal pin down into the motor housing and cleaning the impeller.

i've noticed that the noise is from the prop being unbalanced in the motor, the props will work their way out over a long period of time and start to chatter. the prop could also be broken, cracked or chipped so give it a good look over. all of mine can be quieted down and make noise on occasion but one of my 110's is hopeless.

i have a 70 with stock sponge and ceramics on a 29gal with a pair of cons, 12 rasboras, bn pleco and cories and it's plenty of filtration, you can ditch the aquatech imo.

if you want to go dead quiet, get a canister. i recommend the rena xp series.

would the xp1 run my tank perfectly? the cheapest I can find it online is $100 which is still a bit steep but if i had my time back I wouldn't have bought the aquaclear and just spent the $100 to get the xp1
