I have recently setup a 150 gallon american cichlid tank which is filtered by 2 eheim 2217's. Since I first started them they have been a little noisy, a hum coming from the filters can be heard across the room. Both canisters are making the same amount of noise. My primary concern is that I have not primed them correctly. I followed the instructions and set them up and then I suck on the outlet pipe and waited a few minutes for the canisters to fill up. I then switched them on. I assumed that the noise would pass, however six weeks later it has not. I am sure there is still air in the canister because when I shake them air is expelled from the spray bare, however no matter how much I shake it I can't make it more quiet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2217 and a 2215 and it's hard to tell they are running unless I stick my ear right up to them. Once you get it primed properly and running, all the air should come out right away. It's possible you didn't get all the air out the first time you started it up and it ran dry for awhile and something was damaged, causing it to be noisy. Or, you have a leak in your inlet tubing somewhere that's sucking in air causing it to collect at the top of the canister.

Ok well you should never have to shake a filter to "make it work better" Im running two 2217's as part of my filtration system on my 180 gallon. The only time they were loud is when one of them had a broken impeller shaft, and another time where when I put the filter back together after cleaning the impeller wasn't seated properly in the shaft. Check to make sure the impeller is seated properly and be gently with it because it is a ceramic shaft.

Im guessing has to be something wrong with the impeller or the ceramic shaft because mine is running super quiet u cant even hear it.

I had the same problem with my marineland c220. For some reason if I unplug it while it's running, and plug it in almost immediatly after it makes this really bad grinding sound but then it's quiet until I turn it off. This has worked for me since I got it in May, so I might try that. Otherwise it could be a few things, maybe your stuffing it with too much filtration, bad impellor, air.

My 2217 has a hum whilst running. I find that putting a stone on top of the motor housing quietens it a fair bit. I suppose there must be some sort of hum resonance occuring within the housing, which the stone just damps. Maybe worth a try.
I've had this 2217 running for quite a while now. There's nothing "wrong" with it as such, apart from being a tiny bit noisy. My 2215 is defo quieter.
