ok.. I have a noisey Emp 400.. I have cleaned it.. I bought a new impeller... and it is still noisy.. sounds like an impeller noise as opposed to a motor noise... I understand that essentially its just plastic.. and plastic isn't exactly the most structurally sound material.. so I'm thinking the whole center, removable, section needs to be replaced.. this filter is prolly 4+ years old.. should I take it out back and shoot it.. or is there something I may be overlooking..

I had the same problem yesterday but turned out it was the sludge in the impellar housing which was causing the noise. I cleaned out the housing and impellar with a brush and now it's really really quiet. It it's slightly noisey at first and after a week it should be close to silent.

Ya I think if a thorough cleaning don't solve the problem, maybe a new one should be on order.

It is also a good idea to take them (and Pengins) off the tank every now and then to clean them top to bottom. After running a brush in the impeller housing, turn it upside down and spray it out. Silt trapped in the impeller housing will cause premature wear on the impeller and housing.
