Hello, so I set up my 220 gallon tank 3 days ago now and I have 2 JBL CristalProfi 1901e green line external filters fitted and running. I got them as I was told they are very quite, the tank is in my living room and the misses doesn't want it to be noisy, but they aren't!

Its constantly emit a mechanical noise which I can hear for the next room. Now I know that this probably isn't normal and I was wondering if anyone has any cunning ideas for fixing this?

I have been told that it's normally for a freshly set up external filter to be noisy as air is still trapped in the mechanism and you just shake the filter a few times a day to release the air. I have been doing this for 2 days now and it's not getting any better.

Do I need to start thinking about taking apart the impeller mechanism and check/clean it?

Any ideas would be very helpful as the constant drone is really getting on my nerves!!

Both Brand new, it's not cavitating sounds more of a wouring sound like from the impeller .

So what you're saying, is, its probably just the normal mechanical running sound a pump makes?
This is why I always kept my tanks in the basement, but then again, my wife divorced me anyway.
Guess if I had put them in the living room right away, it would have saved me years of stress and antagonism.

Not exactly, it sounds like an exadurated impeller sound if that makes sense... Like it working too hard.I have just seen a suggestion somewhere else to tip the filter to a 45 degree angle and it will release more air. I did this and it has improved.. Still not great but better.

Yeah.. Women! And she isn't exactly 'happy' about the 7fter to say the least!

Whenever I unplug a filter for cleaning or anything else - it pretty much always sounds "off" to me for a day or two until everything settles.

It does sound as if there is still air trapped in the filter. Unplug the filter, gently shake it and see if any air appears in the output hose, if it does, plug back in and see if it corrects the problem.

Double check that all the hose connections are snug, sometimes if they aren't, air is drawn in through the fittings. Also verify that the hoses aren't too long with dips or sags that can trap air.

Cool I will give it till tomorrow.. That will be 3 days to see if it works itself out naturally. If not I will do what you suggest and check all the hose connections etc. Thanks

Have you got an airstone near the intake?
Air trapped in a filler sounds more like a rattle.
Pain in the backside when things don't work properly.

Tell me about it! Bloody filters cost me £500 and i was told they were the best on the market... Now the damn things are turning my dream tank into a noisy inconvenience.

No airstone is in the tank, again they are noisy so I trying to keep the tank quite.
