I run 2 Canisters and 2x Penguin 350 HOB's on my 120. Over the past week I have had to clean the impellers on BOTH the HOB's because sand gets in and there is an annoying grinding sound.

The stock in my tank loves to stir up the sand and whalla! When I was away for a night, one acted up and my roomy just unplugged so their went my BB.

Any ideas on how to cut down on this? I was thinking I could put some stocking around it but then it wouldn't suck up some of the solid waist that gets tossed around. Also thought about cutting the intake short, but then it wouldn't be as good at pulling some of the bottom waist up.

And nah, I really don't wanna remove the sand.

Put a sponge on the intakes and cut your intakes shorter.
You can't really have sand and intakes close enough to the substrate to suck in
debris/poop but not sand.
Not having your filter suck in debris/poop also means you can siphon it out before your filter processes it into nitrate.

Depending on what canisters you have they should be relatively safe from sand since the motor is typically at the top of the filter after the last stage. Still, you don't want a filter sucking in sand.
