The overflow and sump on my 75 gallon make lots of noise. The overflow has a durso standpipe which helped with the noise, but the output into the sump is still very noticeable, because the drain pulls in lots of air.

The air gets sucked in because otherwise a full siphon would form, which is a lot more flow than my pump (quiet one 3000, 1" bulkhead)

Anything I can do to fix this?

Does it sound boiling water? Any pics of your setup?

If the noise is coming from the sump, try to extend the drain line into the water. If the Durso is not quiet enough, you could try the Hofer Gurgle Buster.

The sump makes more noise. I've got the durso working pretty good, it doesn't gurgle at all, and the air getting sucked into it from the top isn't making any loud noises either.

But, all the air that goes into the drain comes out in the sump, so the output into the sump has lots of bubbles in it.

I don't see any simple way to fix this, because if the drain can't suck in air, a full siphon forms which rapidly outpaces the pump. And then it sucks in air.

I am going to attempt to give advise I have no credentials to give... please disregard this if its no good.

I just bought a used sump, my first one. Its sitting in the basement not yet installed, but the man I bought it from told me a few things for controlling noise, one of which seems like it might help you.

He had these installed on the pipes leaving the tank and headed to the sump.

He showed me on a tank that was running how if you found the "sweet spot" in the valve setting, no air was pulled into the sump and the noise was cut to almost nothing.

Thanks, I had considered doing that. It's a lot simpler than getting a larger pump, anyway. Does it matter where I place it? Just below the bulkhead, in the overflow itself, etc.

I will probably convert the ribbed tubing of the drain to PVC and add a ball valve.

These are placed just short of the end of the hose before it drops into the filter socks. Under the tank where they are easy to reach.

I apologize for my ignorance, but I have no idea if placement will make any difference or not.
