That is just part of how they classify the rays. Part of the name, not actually how they are born. Probably who discovered it.
 
I saw somewhere on here a reference to hystrix. There was discussion on whether or not they were true or false. Then someone else referred to them as true cf. I'll see if I can find it.

I think that was me. :) You mean P. cf. Hystrix?

cf. means that you are reffering to a undecribed species that looks like the species name you put behind.

The hystrix from brazil/rio negro is not the true hystrix. The real deal is from argentina. It looks a bit like a "hystrix" from brazil. That is why cf is used.
