I saw somewhere on here a reference to hystrix. There was discussion on whether or not they were true or false. Then someone else referred to them as true cf. I'll see if I can find it.
Can't fine the exact location. This is the term, run it through google:

this is a CITES page. They list P. Histrix and P. CF Hystrix. the first being illegal to export, the second being limited to 5000.

That is just part of how they classify the rays. Part of the name, not actually how they are born. Probably who discovered it.

You mean P. cf. Hystrix?cf. means that you are reffering to a undecribed species that looks like the species name you put behind.
The hystrix from brazil/rio negro is not the true hystrix. The real deal is from argentina. It looks a bit like a "hystrix" from brazil. That is why cf is used.
