Hey guys. Been a member for 4 years and this is my first post lol.. I just recently got a tank and a GT about 3 inches. I've cycled the tank and conditioned the water and introduced him to the tank today. He is doing fine but he seems to not want to go up for food. I'm feeding him Hikari Cichlid Gold mini pellets floating type. Should I be feeding him something else if he continues to not go up to get food? sometimes it will be right over him but he still doesn't go grab it. He swims all over the bottom of the tank. I tried some flakes but he just spits them back out. He also tries to eat the sand and spits that back out so I'm guessing he is hungry, just not eating. My friend told me GTs love to roam around all over.

Should I be worried or am I overreacting. Should i try some other food like Krill or blood worms? Thanks guys. :D

4 years and finally a fish.

I agree with xaznboi
and most cichlids do that with their substrate

If you want to train the fish to come to the surface, mix in floating food with sinking food. Or take the floating food and mix it into the water. Those two methods have always worked for me and stubborn fish.

My GT took all of 2 or 3 days to learn that I was the source of food so it may just take some time for it to become used to the tank and you.

Yeah try mixing floating with sinking, that should help. Also what worked for me is try crushing your pellets up. This will cause pieces of the pellets to sink, and others to float. That way he will see the food falling but also see where it is coming from and he will start to take the food off the top.

yeah +1 to thedarkone's advice, i usually mix in floating with sinking and they all see where it comes from so they eat the sinking and then go up for the floating, but if he is in tank by himself he may not feel secure enough to go up to the top since he is little, i would add some kind of schooling fish to make him feel more comfortable. also be on the look out for his poo and watch it closely, GTs are prone to parasitic/bacterial infections so he will need to be treated right away if his poo isnt normal GOOD LUCK with your new addition :)

My gt was the same at first but now i can hand feed him.
my texas wasn't eating off the top till i added some convicts as dithers.

thank you guys. I will try mixing the foods. He is rooming with a Chocolate Pleco. I'm feeding the Pleco algae wafers for now and I think the GT ate a bit of it. I'm out to get some blood worms today too, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Still barely eating :(

He doesn't look sick. I threw in frozen bloodworms. It'd be right above his head but he wouldn't grab it. When it disbands, he grabs a few pieces from the floor. The pleco grabbed the rest.

The GT is about 3 inches long. He still doesn't go for the pellets (Hikari Cichlid Gold mini floating type). I'm thinking of getting some sinking pellets..

He's swimming around like he's okay though.
