I really hope you can all help me because I am a University student trying to set up my first saltwater and I am trying to learn the proper way of going about this. For some crazy reason all these products are soooo much more expensive in Canada, I have no idea why. Luckily for me I live in Windsor which borders with Detroit and I can do all my shopping in the US. Ok I have a few more questions I hope you can help me with.

1.) Well my tap water in Windsor is 7.0, will those special substrates alone be able to keep my PH that high???? I was looking at these, which one do you think is the best???

2.) My tank is a 65 gallon which is 36" x 18" and then its 24" tall. If I were to buy a 40 lb bag of the florida crushed coral would that be enough???? You only want 2 inches in saltwater correct??

3.) K now this is going to be the most important question, because rock is a huge investment. LR here costs like $10 a pound and that times 65 gallons is $650. Although on big als I have found this

http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS...areefrock50lbs

I didnt know what to think when I say that because it's only $40 for 50lbs!!!!! sounds to good to be true. It says its good to be used for a base rock??? I don't understand something about this. So is this rock actually live rock??? Like if I purchased this 50lbs and then bought 10lbs of stuff from the store which costs $10 a pound, would this be the exact same thing as buying 65lbs of $10 stuff????? Like will this cheaper rock still grow purple algae, small inverts and corals and such?? This may be the deciding factor in me jumping into saltwater because this could cut my costs huge!!!!

4.) Lastly I don't want to get a Protein skimmer right away although I may in the future. Perhaps 6 months down the road. If I have AC 110 and 70. 2 inches of the best substrate (you tell me which one) 50 lbs of that bigals rock and then 10 lbs of the store bought stuff. My stocking was planning on being maybe 5 or 6 different type of clown fish, like the black ones and the tomato and so on. Eventually through in some gobies. How often am I looking at water changes??? And is the substrate strong enough to keep the PH up, do I need to add buffer when adding new water??? or can I just dump in some 7.0 tap water with conditioner and then let the substrate do its job????

Thank You so Much for your help

i don't know about that live rock. it DOES sound too good to be true. and if that's the case it usually is there's no point in buying low quality LR. there really isn't. it just introduces problem to your tank that you really don't want and could have avoided. algea, dead spots, crabs, mantis shrimp, anemones... the list goes on.
DON'T BUY BAD LR! if money's an issue just buy a little and start out stocking light. and about those clowns, they usually fight with conspecifics. so if you're going to keep them don't keep more than one species and only keep a mated pair at most.
you should do water changes at least 10% per week 20 would be best. also when you get your rocks don't add live rock and THEN get reg. rocks! the bacterial growth will re-cycle your tank and you'll have another nitrate spike.
best of luck!
saltwater is really worth it!

You cant look at Big Als US website you have to go to a big Als in Canada because they cant ship from the states to you. There a quite a few around i payed about 8 dollars a pound i did 20 pounds for my 35 gallon my 2 clowns and 3 green/ blue Chromis are doing Great. I would suggest a good Filter i find that the BioWheel Filter is the best. But dont get the Cheap on go with the best brand the Dual Bio Wheel is the best i find it makes alot more oxygen Bubbles in the water then most do. and that is critical for a saltwater tank that there is more oxyen.

the crushed coral sounds about good i have about 1.5 inches on the bottom of the tank. But Pending on what your putting in the tank you might want to look at sand.

Thank you

Feel free to contact me if you have more questions

I believe that base rock isn't live rock, what they sell as base rock is usualy completely dry and dead. You can buy mostly the base rock, and then only some live rock, then let the tank set up for longer so that they both can cure. Eventualy the dead rock will get the stuff you want on it just by being around the live stuff. It takes longer that way but its cheaper. And for big tanks that buying all live rock would be way to expensive.

Yeah if its what we call base rock its dried out live rock. It will work fine and shouldnt take much longer to cycle then if you used all live rock it will just take longer to grow stuff on the outside of it.
Someone above said cheap LR will add all sorts of bad stuff into your tank but you have just as much chance with good live rock (unless bought directly from a display tank) so i wouldnt worry about that to much and if its proper base rock everything will already be dead.

when you say so much more expensive in Canada what do you mean ..in other words the Canadian Dollar in the US is only worth about half what the US dollar is give or take a few..because i know as American on many things i would rather trade in my US dollar for Canadian and buy there as a rule i save lots of money

don't start a salt water tank "cheaply"..as said, go to a smaller scene and give it time...

buy a small tank, add to it 30% of its volume in good live rock. put a good substrate and you're set.. if you don't want the skimmer be low on the population and strong on the water changes.

good luck!

if you start wrong it won't work and another sw aquarist will be lost.
