Okay so I was at a LFS in New Jersey, and I see a young 5-7'' florida gar in a tank for 40 bucks. I would really like to get this fish because he was incredibly pretty and pretty cool looking too. Plus he was in a 30 gal. If i wanted to keep him in the same tank his whole life, probably without upgrading his tank, what size would be minimum for just that guy alone? Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 125 will work but others on here will say no. In all reality you can house a Florida Gar in a 125 for life, but not then he can live in there for YEARS and eventually you'll want to get something that has a 2 foot wide footprint.

I would say that while a 125 or 150 would work for a very long time, a standard 180 has the best minimum footprint for a Florida.

Okay thanks!!! So i should figure out if I will be able to get a larger tank in the future before I get the fish. Got it!

agreed with the above posts. 125's are fairly easy to pick up used. youll have no problem finding one. but the only problem with gars is the fact that you cant just have one, well, chuck norris can, but no one else can restrain themselves. so def get a 125, then buy a gar, and then buy at least one more.... and one more.....

and then get 2 more, then buy a bigger tank
