Yeah, so the title kinda says it all - I'm gonna get a tank around the 100g range, and I was wondering if there's a reason not to use a small pond filter for filtration purposes? Tank will house my recently rescued RES turtle, and we all know how much they poop : P

Thanks!

I see no problem with it, as long as the pump output doesn't blow the turtle into a tizzy every time he swims in front of it. I was actually eying a pond filter yesterday for a stock tank.

I have a pond filter in my 125 turtle tank with an AC110 until I get a better way to filter it, and all of my friends stock tanks for turtles are filtered by pond filters.

They work in aquariums, but the flow rate can't be too much or you will risk your turtle drowning.

OK, the tank I'm leaning towards has a built-in overflow box (it was used for saltwater previously). Like I said before, total noob here - so I need to clarify some things I'm not exactly sure about at this point...

I realize there are holes drilled in the back of the tank where the overflow is...and these are fitted with 'bulkheads'....so ones is used to take water out and one is used to put water in...but....

How does the dirty water get into the overflow box??? Turtle poop sinks. *looks dazed and confused and part of that may be sleep deprivation*

If I use a canister filter, or pond filter, either one, I realize I have to have the pipes or tubes to lead from the bulkhead fittings to the actual filter - do you have to have a water pump to force the water into a canister filter or does it do that on it's own?

Am I even making any sense at this point - I don't know! I'm lost in all the choices : O Help me please!

OK adding more to my rant - would it just be better to ignore the overflow and somehow block up the bulkheads? (Do they make ready-made 'lids' for that? LOL)

Then if I put one powerhead on one end to send the water to the opposite side where the other powerhead lies in waiting to suck up the muck and send it up through a tube to the filter? Would that work? Thanks!
