okay then
here is how i got a few snake heads a few days ago my uncle had been fishing and he caught a few snake heads and 6 catfishes
now among these they got 3 small snake heads like 5"-7" the others were more than 18" (all the big fish were distributed among the family members and will be eaten soon)
my uncle knows that i like fish and he thought i might want to keep these natives
actually by the time i went to his place and picked these guys up one of them had jumped out and had been killed by ants
the other 2 i got are 6" and 8"+
now after some research i have found out that they are 5 banded SHs
and they are right now in my 95g cube with my 6"+ FH
i have set up a few caves for them and have added a few tuffies from my koi pond, but they haven't eaten them as of yet, i also added a few ghost shrimps in the tank but i still haven't seen them eating anything yet
all the tuffies are still there
and many of the shrimps were eaten by my FH

will have to get a new tank for the snake heads
but as of now i am broke and i really can't get a tank for at least like a month or so

any ideas as to what i might do to help my fish or should i just euthanise them
anyways i like snake heads deep fried as it is a delicacy here
i have also seen the giant SH here at the fish market

thanks for any help

HI,

why killing them ?
SH need a few days to settle in a new tank.
Shrimp and insects are a good diet for the fife stripes.
They get between 20 and 25 cm in length.

Can you post pictures, ande by the way, where are you from in India ?

Cheers Brucki

HI,

Why killing them (only if you're really hungry ;-)

the five stripe likes shrimp and insects, but snakeheads need a few days to settle in a new tank.

Where from india are you from

Brucki

my FH was nearly an inch when i got him
i don't mind keeping them but its just that after reading a few posts about SHs here, where every one says keep SHs by themselves and not others i just didn't want to test my luck with my FH as i have been keeping for quite a while and am attached to it,i am quite sure he is disease free lives in a 95g, water changes every 4 days water filteration at 1600 ltrs/hour, gets a real varied diet no feeders ever fed to him other than the ghost shrimp from my own ghost shrimp colony or the odd fish i tried to keep him with)

other than that i was a little apprehensive of the snake heads when they weren't eating
anyways gonna try chicken heart today
i hope they eat

i was just thinking about eating them if i wasn't able to house them right
they are really tasty(believe me on this one)

and i am not going to release any fish once kept in a tank to wild as there might be a chance that a disease i haven't noticed might be there and i may accidentally add it into the wild
most of their time they spend in the caves and the only time they come out is when they have the need to surface for O2 and they are quite graceful not at all skittish even after their ordeal of getting caught and having been out of water for nearly 4.5 hrs(my uncle put 'em in a wet gunny bag and brought 'em to his place(was shocked to see them alive)

EDIT: hmmm i am from mysore(city) in karnataka(state) in india (to be more in context from the cauvery river basin), the rivers here run with awesome cats, snake heads, spiny eels and lots many more awesome predators

HI,

I know snakheads are delicious, I sometimes buy one in an asian shop here in Germany to eat it.

I wouldnt give chicken heart to the fish, its difficult to digest for them.
Better use insects crustaceans,worms,fish.

All the best for u and your fish.

By the way, which species of snakeheads are in your area ??

let us know how it goes , and i will have to take your word on eating them , iam not keen on fish so will probably never find out what they taste like , what other fish do you eat over there ?

yeah i will keep you guys updated as to what is happening and how it is doing
hmmm spiny eels, almost any SHs, different types of catfish, then those carps, tilapia, perch...........many more, but i am not very familiar with their names
i have seen SHs completely black in color and many were 3'+ at the market though

good to know that you have eaten them, the curry is supposed to be better but dig the deep fried

ok no chicken heart just the above listed, any chance you can get them on pellets, if yes what kind, all my fish are on pellets or dried shrimp, some times the odd insect caught

the 5 banded are the most common ones, seen a few which are totally black but have some red on the sides, seen the giant SH, have to go to the market and see
actually there are 2 rivers which flow pretty close by the house i mean like whithin 20km distance
next time i go to the market i shall get some pics

HI,

getting them on pellets should make no bigger problems.
Try shrimp pellets (Tetra) they have a strong smell, and SH like them.
