New into aquariums. Have a non-drilled 180 gal glass tank and 3D background with an FX5 cannister for a mbuna community. Everyone says to over stock to mitigate the aggressiveness of cyclids. I have noticed almost everyone has at least two filters for obvious reasons. I was thinking of going with a wet/dry for bio and the FX5 for mechanical.
Could I eliminate the overflow box for the W/D and use the output from the FX5 directly to the W/D? I would use a ball valve in order to get the proper flow into the W/D from the FX5 with the rest of the flow going to the DT. I would use a submersible pump in the W/D to return water to the tank. I would also use float switches and relays to shutdown the FX5 or the sub pump should the other one fail so that my feet don't get wet.
I haven't talked to my LFS's yet so I don't know if this is a dumb idea or what. I just thought that by doing it this way, I would pretty much eliminate solids from getting into the W/D.
Thanks.

What you're suggesting would work, but it's not ideal. The outputs of the two pumps will drift apart, so you're going to need to continually adjust the ball valve.
The other problem would be if the pump in the FX-5 fails. It will siphon water into your sump.

I guess a better way to do it would be to put float valves on each output, so the system is self-regulating. It would be a good idea to also use float switches to disable a pump if the valve is closed.

Overflows are a far better way to go because they are self-regulating. If you're worried about solids getting into your sump, you can use a filter sock on the output of the overflow. If you need finer mech filtration, there are many other options.

agree with cypher1024,it will be a problem in the long run.
I have a sump and and fx5 on my 180 and i love it,set it up the right way without short cuts and you will not be dissapointed.
