Hi im new here, just thought i would say hi. I have been reading on here for the past 2 or 3 days and I know that you all have great knowledge of fish. I have a 50g. with a baby oscar in it. I guess you could say its my first real large fish. I have my tank all set up/cycled and I just wanted some advice on what I can put in there with my new "big/little" guy. I really like the way that jack dempseys look, and I know that they will need a bigger tank within a few months if not sooner. Would these to fish be at war all the time?

not right off the bat but you are looking at atleast a 75g minimum fo rboth those guys, and teh JD will be ALOT more aggressive than the Oscar.

I was thinking about getting a smaller bottom dwelling fish but i dont really know wath I could add, and not get killed when the oscar gets bigger. Any ideas?

i disagree with the clown loach suggestion because your Oscar will grow 10x faster than your clowns. If they have a place to get to and hide it may work but something like a raphael or Syndontis will also work, generally you look for bottom feeders with a big appetite to clean up after the Oscar. Look for bottom feeders that get between 6-10in, you can go bigger but going smaller doesnt mean you ahve to get a huge tank for something like a channel cat or something that gets over a foot atleast!!!

welcome to MFK! not sure what kind of bottom dweller you could have, maybe some kind of pleco that doesnt get big like a bristlenose? btw its nice to see ppl from ohio on here, which part of ohio are you from?

yea, I agree with the synondontis/pictus suggestion.
I would go for a larger tank first to make sure the oscar doesnt have territory problems

Welcome to MFK by the way!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Im from the Cleveland area. Also i have a quick question about hiding places, I have read on a few sites where some people say not a put plants in with Oscars and others that say to put them in. Right now i have a XXL tall plant that is about 20" tall and 4 shorter ones that are about 8" tall. I also have a fake tree thing that is shaped like a stump, its big enough for him to swim in to (8"x8"), it also has a bunch of fake plants sticking out from around it. Should i get another cave type thing for him? Or should I take some of the plants out of the tank and get a large piece of drift wood?

I put a tera cotta pot in there. But my oscar seems really like a fraidy cat.... i havent seen him eat yet and he just kind of sits on one side.... how long does it take a fish to get used to its tank? It must be a shock going from a crapy pet store tank to his own private tank... any idea on how to make a smoother transition?

never mind he is doing fine now... just feed him and he ate it all...
