ok alot of people including me at one time started to get into raising cichla.we all have questions and concerns on how to care for cichla.I want to start one thread based on raising cichla from 2'' and beyond..if any info/tips i leave out please fill it in..i want to try and keep one thread based on advice/tips to one thread then 40 of the same topics and questions aasked each month..
first lets start off by stating that, all cichla will at one point or another require a min 300 gallon aquarium (temensis 8x4x30'' min) regardless of species..diffrent growth rates are also another thing to keep in mind..some cichla grow slow then theres some cichla you cant control their growth because they just grow quick..
ok now thats out the way lets get down to raising cichla..
this is all based on my exp raising cichla..
first i'd like to start off with a 40g breeder or a 45g breed tank..keep in mind dont buy brand new growout tanks because you wont need them long if only used for raising cichla..keep the temp from 86-88 degrees..at 2" i like to give them feeder guppies..after a week or two and they are use to you try and give them a variety of other foods..my fav is frozen shrimp..other like tilapia..advantages of using one of the two or both is once the cichla start becoming biiger you can stuff the frozen foods with pellets..dont try and pellet train a small cichla at 2''..just think of it as you wouldnt feed a newborn baby a hard taco from taco bell right? something with small cichla and pellets..hard for them to eat..
i'll have to finnish what i got to say tomorrow the battery on my laptop is dieing and i cant find my charger..but if anyone else would chime in their info tips feel free..and hopefully this thread will help out..
