hi, im looking for a gar compatible with a ornate bichir, can anyone provide me with a few popular gars other than the alligatior gar and thier max sizes? also, where can i get a young (2-3 inches) gar? thnx alot

Atractosteus tropicus- tropical gar 4'
Lepisosteus platostomus- shortnose gar 2 1/2'-
Lepisosteus oculatus- spotted gar 4'
Lepisosteus platyrhincus- florida gar 4'
The above are wid caught sizes in home aquaria they are often smaller. However even the smallest Lepisosteus platostomus- shortnose gar will need a tank at least 36'' wide.Due to their scalation gars are not vey flexible and require a largeturning radius-Anne

another thing is at 2"-3", while i believe it's possible to tell a Lepisosteus from Atractosteus, it's almost impossible to tell the different Lepisosteus apart. so while you might be after a shortnose, and the gar is sold as a shortnose, theres no guarantee unless the guy selling it really really knows the stuff, or theres info on when and where the fish is collected etc. for one to make an educated guess. but good thing is like anne said in home aquaria they are often smaller, but a wide tank is needed eventually.
