Hi all,

I've been keeping all sorts of fish for the last 7 years or so.

Currently I've got a 75 gallon reef tank, with all types of corals in it, live rock, and a dwarf fuzzy lionfish. :D

Next up I have a 23 gallon flat-back hex, that is planted and has yet to host of any fish.

Up next I've got a 36 gallon bowfront with a 4-5" piranha that was more or less given to me by a friend who was moving and needed a home FAST.

So I've taken in this awesome fish, but now I need to know the appropriate set-up, feeding, etc, etc.

Thank you for any and all replies.

David

Nice one on taking the piranha in! As Bderick said, check the Id threa. But if you’re having trouble pinpointing which piranha species you have, post some pictures up. And then we can all chip in with advice. Welcome to MFK and the piranha community.

Ok so after checking out the link I didn't find what species I had. But I talked to the past owner, and he told me it was serrasolmus sanchezi. Is that one of the listed ones and it's just under a different name? I saw the serrasolmus'.

Thanks,
David

Serrasalmus Sanchezi is a verry cool fish. You won't need a bigger tank because they only grow to 7" max. They are also known as Red Spilo because of the red throat. They can show lots of character depending how comfertable they are in thier suroundings. Piranhas pretty much all have the same diet. They are scavengers so they will eat just about anything you give them. And if it's not chasing your finger yet, it will be soon:nilly:

Nice pickup

Congrats on your pick up! :headbang2

Feed it a nice varied diet and stay away from feeders.

stay away from feeders feed them shrimp, scallop, fish fillet, talipia, frozen food, silver side, etc....if you San still doesnt eat, just keep feeding him..it will eat when its hungry...but i can take days, weeks, or maybe month for him to eat..but dont worry piranha can go without food for months...you need to train him to get use to it. What i did when my sanchezi didnt eat the food, i take it out within 15 mins just repeat the process

when you say not to feed feeder fish, does that apply just to the store bought variety or homegrown as well? and do the shrimp need to be live or just uncooked dead shrimp?
